Solar Panels in Sutton Coldfield

Sutton Coldfield is part of Birmingham for planning, but it has more conservation areas than most parts of the city. Birmingham City Council lists 29 conservation areas across Birmingham, and three of them are in Sutton Coldfield: High Street, Anchorage Road and Four Oaks. The High Street area, which takes in King Edward’s Square, Upper Clifton Road, Mill Street and the northern end of Coleshill Street, also has an Article 4 Direction. That removes some of the permitted development rights homeowners elsewhere take for granted.

For most roofs in Sutton Coldfield, solar panels are permitted development. The rules allow roof panels that stand no more than 0.2 metres beyond the roof slope and stay below the highest part of the roof, not counting chimneys. Panels also have to be sited, as far as practicable, to keep their effect on the building’s appearance down. In a conservation area, panels can’t go on a wall that fronts a highway. Inside the High Street Article 4 area, ask the council’s conservation team before you commit to anything visible from the street.

Away from the old town centre, the picture is simpler. Much of Sutton Coldfield grew after the railway line from Birmingham opened in 1862, and Wikipedia records a house-building boom in areas such as Boldmere, Walmley and Four Oaks. Outside the three conservation areas, ordinary permitted development covers most homes. The questions then are the usual ones: which way the roof faces, how much shading it gets and how much of the power you will use in the day.

How much sun a Sutton Coldfield roof gets

PVGIS, the European Commission’s solar model, puts Sutton Coldfield at about 968 kWh a year for every kWp of panels on a south-facing roof at a 35 degree pitch. Facing east or west, the figure drops to about 776 kWh. That is within a few kWh of the figure for central Birmingham, so there is no Sutton-specific penalty or bonus. The roof’s direction and shading matter far more than the postcode.

Shading is the one to watch. The Energy Saving Trust says the main maintenance job is keeping nearby trees trimmed to cut shading. Where one part of a roof is shaded for part of the day, panel optimisers or a split design can stop that shade dragging down the rest of the array.

Batteries, repairs and older systems

A lot of Sutton Coldfield homes already have panels. Some were fitted a decade or more ago, and the Energy Saving Trust says an inverter needs replacing after around 12 years. If yours has gone quiet, solar panel repair starts by tracing which part has failed. If you want to use more of your own power in the evening, adding a battery to existing solar panels is usually possible without touching the panels on the roof.

Every new system has to be registered with National Grid Electricity Distribution, the local network operator. For a normal home system, that is a notification within 28 days of it being switched on. Larger systems need permission before they are connected. It’s part of the job, and you should get confirmation that it has been done.
