VAT-free solar panels end on 31 March 2027: what it means for Birmingham homes

Installing solar panels in a home is currently zero-rated for VAT. HMRC’s rules on energy-saving materials set that rate until 31 March 2027, and it covers qualifying batteries too. As of September 2026, the government had not announced whether the relief will be extended.

What the zero rate covers

The 0% rate applies to the installation of energy-saving materials in residential accommodation, which includes solar panels on a home. It is applied on the installer’s invoice, so there is nothing to claim or apply for. Batteries qualify when they meet HMRC’s conditions.

It doesn’t apply to business premises. Commercial installations are taxed differently, and commercial solar panels covers that.

What it is worth

Checkatrade lists installed solar in Birmingham at £7,305 to £11,929, with an average of £9,299. If the standard 20% rate applied to a job of that size, it would add around £1,860. That is why the deadline matters more than most grant schemes.

What could happen after March 2027

There are three possibilities, and nobody outside government knows which it will be:

1. The zero rate is extended.
2. It ends, and home solar goes back to a reduced or standard rate.
3. It changes, for example covering some equipment and not others.

Leave time to plan

A solar job isn’t a same-week purchase. There is a survey, a quote, possibly a planning check if you are in one of Birmingham’s 29 conservation areas, and then installation.
